Replacement Hospital  |  Ishpeming, Michigan

Peter Basso Associates provided mechanical and electrical engineering design services for the Bell Memorial Replacement Hospital.  The building has a gross floor area of 102,401 square feet and is connected to a clinical building with a gross floor area of 44,423 square feet and a maintenance building totaling 2,844 square feet.

The hospital includes 30 inpatient beds, three operating rooms, an Emergency Department, Radiology, Rehabilitation, Food Services, an MRI dock on grade, and associated support spaces.

The heating system is distributed in a constant flow primary, variable flow secondary pumping arrangement.  Chilled water for cooling is provided by two packaged 200 ton, air cooled chillers, each designed for 50% of the calculated cooling load.  Each chiller is provided with a variable speed primary in-line pump.  Ventilation systems are designed to achieve the ventilation rates prescribed in the mechanical code and MDCIS BHS minimum design standards. Two packaged rooftop units and four custom air handling units are provided for the building.  Medical gas systems are designed in accordance with NFPA99 (latest edition) and the Michigan Building Code. The hospital is provided with an energy management system, including digital control and energy management systems to control all mechanical equipment including air terminal units.

A new secondary metered electrical service is provided for the hospital.  A microprocessor based metering system and surge protection device have been included on each side of the distribution switchboard.  Mechanical equipment loads will be served from power distribution panels and/or motor control centers located in the mechanical or electrical rooms.  Lighting systems are designed to provide light levels in accordance with Illuminating Engineering Society recommended standards.  Additional electrical engineering design includes fire alarm and nurse call systems.
