New YMCA of the Blue Water Area | Port Huron, MI

The 62,000 square foot YMCA of the Blue Water Area is organized around a central spine with a public entry at each end, while a third entry provides access to a childcare center. A focus of the building is the aquatics center, which features two water areas: a six-lane pool capable of hosting high school competitive events, and a leisure pool with water slides and therapy components. The facility also houses an over-sized gymnasium, weight/fitness area, a group fitness room, multi-purpose rooms, a concessions area, a drop-in baby sitting room, locker rooms with a special needs section, and a child care center complete with outdoor playground.

The hot water heating system is designed in a primary piping loop configuration with two variable flow primary hot water heating circulating pumps (one pump as standby).  Hot water heating is supplied from the boiler system to the air handling unit hot water heating coils, tempering coils, perimeter heating devices, snow melt system and under floor heating system.

A hydronic under floor heating system heats the outdoor exposed floor areas of the gymnasium, racket ball courts and teen room. The under floor heating system is to prevent the transmission of cold air from entering the floor spaces that are exposed to the unconditioned parking garage below.

A microprocessor-based direct digital control (DDC) system controls the air handling units, rooftop units, chilled water system, hot water heating systems, and monitors space conditions in the new building. The control systems are networked and connected to a central monitoring and control station that provides energy management functions as well as diagnostic feedback, monitoring and control of the entire HVAC systems.

Electrical service is a Detroit Edison Primary Service with an indoor metering cabinet, primary switch, and dry type transformer.  A point addressable fire alarm system capable of transmitting alarm and trouble signals to a remote supervising station or central station was designed for the building.
