In recent years, universities have seen a surge in science and nursing-focused students creating a higher demand for state-of-the-art laboratory space. As a result, OCC Southfield campus administrators commissioned architect TMP to develop options for improvements to its existing science facility. PBA provided MEP engineering services for the project.
The project includes a 65,000 square foot addition and a 15,000 square foot renovation. The 2-level addition included eight new laboratories and four new preparatory laboratories on the second level, as well as a service basement. In the interest of saving space, all laboratories have a shared preparatory lab equipped for both demonstration set-up as well as research capabilities. A completely renovated nursing laboratory suite along with a surgical and respiratory therapy laboratory highlights the expanding health science department.
The lighting system consists of multiple light sources such as incandescent, fluorescent, metal halide and light emitting diodes provided by direct, direct/indirect, indirect, surface, lay-in and cove mounted fixtures. Low voltage lighting controls are utilized throughout the building.
