Demand Control Ventilation and energy recovery methods can boost building efficiency

Some of the most challenging areas confronting the designers of HVAC systems for K-12 schools are the high occupant load areas such as Cafeterias, Gymnasiums and Auditoriums. Code dictates a very high occupant load which must then be accounted for in the heating/cooling calculations, but that occupant load also translates into a code-prescribed outside air ventilation rate.

Battle Creek Central High School Addition and Remodel  |  Battle Creek, MI

Battle Creek Central High School is located in the heart of Michigan’s third-largest city, Battle Creek. The 250,000 square foot existing facility, originally built in 1908 has since been recognized as a landmark within the community. In 2008, the district sought the need to both extensively renovate the landmark structure and to expand. The 160,800 sf expansion provided much needed additional educational space for the high school and district.

Power & Architectural Lighting Design for Tempe Preparatory Academy

To ease overcrowding at Tempe Preparatory Academy, Peter Basso Associates provided MEP engineering for the 5,000 sf addition to the existing campus.  Included were three new stand-alone buildings, or “pods.”  Pod A has two science classrooms/labs and associated preparation room, Pod B has five seminar/classrooms, and  Pod C has an art classroom and two offices.  Cooling is provided by rooftop units and a variable air volume system for control within each classroom.  Power and lighting were designed for the interior spaces, along with building-mounted exterior lighting.

Marine City Middle School HVAC Replacement Project

Engineering the right building environment for Marine City Middle School included replacement of the existing electric heating and direct expansion packaged terminal air conditioning units with hot water heating and direct expansion cooling unit ventilators;  removal of the existing unit ventilator louvers, replacing with new; addition of two Roof Top Units with DX cooling, providing heating via duct mounted hot water tempering coils; revision of the hot water heating system configuration in the main boiler room and throughout most of the building; removal of all pneumatic controls - replacing with DDC controls and lastly, providing new electrical branch circuits to the new mechanical equipment.

Whitmore Lake’s new high school is a model for sustainable design and innovation.  District personnel and school board members provided guiding vision and commitment, and maintained close involvement with the design team throughout the project.  The combined efforts of the team delivered a LEED® Silver rating for the project from the U.S. Green Building Council.
